Monaco, a small royal principality on the French Riviera, is possibly the most enticing little stretch of land on the planet, measuring less than two kilometres in length. Monaco, which has the highest per capita income in Europe, exudes exclusivity, and extravagant wealth, attracting a large number of tourists with lavish five-star hotels, designer boutiques, luxury yachts,, and opulent restaurants.
Number 1. Monte Carlo
Despite its small size, Monaco packs an enormous amount of glitz, and luxury. Monte-Carlo is the most glamorous district, found in a spectacularly picturesque setting north of Port Hercule, and overlooking the bay. As Monaco's wealthiest district, Monte-Carlo attracts the rich, and famous. Ferraris, and "beautiful people" fit right into this neighbourhood.
Number 2. Palais Princier de Monaco
The Palais Princier de Monaco, perched high above the sea on the picturesque peninsula of Le Rocher, is home to the world's oldest monarchy. Originally built as a Genoese fortress in the 13th century, the fortress was renovated over the centuries, and transformed into a luxurious Italian Renaissance palace. The palace is a private residence but is occasionally open to the public.
Number 3. Oceanographic Museum of Monaco
With aquariums, exhibitions, games, and relaxation the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco lets you dive into the marine world. From aquariums to its shark lagoon, passing through Turtle Island located on the panoramic terrace, it offers a unique opportunity to know, love, and protect the oceans. This Temple of the Sea is a crossroads of Art, and Science, housing over 6,000 specimens, and priceless Natural History collections.
Number 4. Exotic Garden of Monaco
The Exotic Garden of Monaco is an open-air exhibit of succulent plants from the world's arid regions, specifically the Americas, Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. The Observatory Cave, located at the base of the cliff, is a large cavern suitable for visitors, and local spelunkers to explore its prehistoric rock formations.
Number 5. Cathedrale Notre Dame Immaculee
This neo-Byzantine cathedral features a striking facade of white stones from nearby La Turbie. The cathedral is the final resting place of the Princes of Monaco, and contains the tombs of previous monarchs Prince Rainier, and Princess Grace. The cathedral houses an impressive Grand Organ, which is used for religious services as well as holy music concerts.
Number 6. Japanese Gardens
The lovely Japanese Garden was built in 1994 following strict Zen design principles, at the request of Prince Rainier Third. A stroll through these nearly 2-acre gardens will reveal all of the essential elements of a Japanese garden: a pond, islands, a waterfall, lanterns, bridges, a tea house, and a Zen garden.
Number 7. Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco
Every year on the last weekend of May, the famous Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco race takes place in Monte Carlo. This is the world's only car race that takes place on city streets. The narrow streets are not ideal for race cars, but the race is held on account of tradition. It is one of the world's most popular sporting events, organised by the Automobile Club of Monaco.
Number 8. Opera de Monte Carlo
Opened in 1879, the Monte Carlo Opera is a grand auditorium in the Monte Carlo Casino complex that hosts not only operas but ballets, and performances by the Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. It has premiered many works by composers including Massenet, and Saint-Saëns.
Number 9. Monte Carlo Harbor
Arriving at Hercules Port is an experience in, and of itself, as you dock beneath the dramatic Rock of Monaco, and gaze out over the sparkling Mediterranean. Many luxury yachts are docked here, including the Prince's private vessel. The port is a pleasant place to stroll or grab a bite to eat while admiring the picturesque waterfront scenery.
